Like slut-shaming, body-shaming is the act of judging a woman because of
the attributes of her body. And again, it usually happens when a woman
isn’t shy about revealing her body. Beauty standards constantly promoted
by the media reinforce this type of behavior,
because it reinforces the idea that only certain body types are
celebrated and accepted in our society.
This term originated from the movie by the same name
(Gaslight, 1944),
where a husband emotionally abuses his wife by slowly turning up and
down the gas lights of a room and then insisting she’s crazy when she
notices a difference. In the film, he manipulates her into thinking that
she’s delusional so he can keep her inheritance, but today gaslighting
is a documented manipulation technique. Abuse counselors consider it a
form of emotional violence — and although it also happens to men, women
are the most frequent victims.
Feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and
opportunities in the world. It is the belief that women should be seen as
an equal in the workplace. People who believe in this are called
feminists. It is a false believe that feminists can only be women, but
it is both for men, women, and those who are gender binary. Many believe
that feminism is about being the "same" as man which is false because
biologically men and women will never be the same, but it is possible to
be viewed as equals, and that is the goal of feminist movements.
Misogyny is a hatred and predjudice against women. This is an extreme
form of sexism, people who believe this are called mysogynists. Most
mysogynists do not recognize the behaviors they demonstrate towards
women. Mysongynst typically will see women as property or second class
citizens
Misandry is a hate and predjudice against men. This is an extreme form
of sexism and is often mistaken for feminism in the media. People who
follow these beliefs are called misandrists. This is a very uncommon
term used because people label these women and radical feminists which
is not what they are. Many people say they cannot recognize themselves
as feminists because of religion or personal beliefs, but that is due to
misandry being recognized as feminism.
Violence Against Women is a global issue and women have to live in fear because of it. Types of violence women suffer from is
domestic abuse, rape, harrassment, female genital mutation, early and forced marriage, economic control, emotional abuse, and
unfortunately not all the types of abuse are named. There were 87,000 women killed intentionally in 2017. In Lebanon it is three times higher
that men witnessed their fathers beating their mothers. 49% of women are victims of sex trafficking.
These stats show how often violence against women occurs and reinforces how
scary it is to be a woman in this world.
So you may ask what causes Violence Against Women?
It happens because men and women aren't viewed as equals in society. Women are the second class citizen or are seen as property, and
women suffer immensely because of it. For countries that had great gender ineqality within education, freedom to marry and divorce,
and employment it is predicted that there would be higher levels of partner violence
In many countries the authority that men have over women is normalized and the violence women
suffer from was seen as acceptable.
In healthcare there has been major discrimination against women. It has been seen that women would pay more for healthcare
or get denied access completely based on their gender. Some health care services will not cover women's health services. Some
healthcare groups choose not cover birth control and the excuse is religious reasons. If it was for religious reasons they would
be giving out birth control to prevent abortion so these excuses are unaccepptable and need to be stopped. They also need to consider
that not all of their consumers are religious, practice other religions, or do not practice religion at all, so it is unfair to women
to be denied a basic service such as that.
What about all genders not being able to afford or have access to healthcare?
All genders should have access to healthcare, but there are many disparities seen because women are being denied basic services.
There is also the issue where 1 in 6 women have been a victim of attempted or completed rape. 1 out of 3 (ages 11, 13 and 15) experience
bullying and women are more likely to get bullied. So it is more urgent for rape victims to have their medical care covered post-rape, for
many others to have counseling for the trauma they experience. Everyone should have access to those services, but the point is more women are
going to be seen getting certain services than others
Tax on menstrual products has been an extreme gender injustice going on for as long as we know. Many may argue that the sanitary tax makes up
a large percentage of taxes the government recieve, but the issue is many women cannot even begin to afford their products because of this. Menstrual
products are a basic necessity to women, so why should they be punished from this? We cannot simply ignore menstruation because it is something
that happens natural and is unpreventable.
Why can't women just purchase reusable menstrual products?
There are some women who choose to use those products but to specifically answer why the conversation may be uncomfortable for others.
Cups have been proved to be innefective for some women. And we cannot simply put a cloth on and go because for some there will be
leakage and when you need to change where will you put the used cloth to clean later? There are so many reasons why using reusable products
is so difficult and almost impossible for women who are out and about and want to be comfortable.
